How to properly maintain a guitar? What to pay attention to? What to avoid?

Note: This article discusses the care of acoustic or electroacoustic guitar. For electric guitars, some principles may not be strictly followed.

The guitar, and especially the one made mostly of wood, is an instrument very sensitive to proper handling, maintenance and care.

FACTORS AFFECTING THE LIFE OF THE INSTRUMENT

Air temperature and its sudden changes

The temperature should be between 15 ° C and 25 ° C. It is important, however, that there are not too sharp fluctuations between temperature changes, so that we do not go with a guitar that was in a heated room in a freezing environment. Unless we can otherwise, it is necessary to protect the tool with a high-quality case.

Humidity of the air and its sudden changes

Optimal air humidity should be in the range of 47-52%. This principle is very often underestimated and then usually the body of the guitar dries and thus deteriorates the resonant properties or cracking of the front or back plate of the instrument.

Dustiness

Also, more dust in the room tends to have a bad effect on the wood quality of the instrument, but also on strings, fingerboard and tuning mechanism.

WHAT DO YOU SPECIFY TO CREATE WITH THE GUITAR?

  • overheated rooms
  • dry air
  • placing the guitar near the heat sources
  • any contact with water and abnormal humidity
  • contact with direct sunlight
  • contact with any chemical (except special guitar intended)
